Derm Product Tip: Favorite Winter Moisturizer

I have tried all sorts of lotions, creams, and oils.  Cerave Moisturizing Cream remains my absolute favorite body moisturizer for the dry, cold winter months.  Our whole family uses it (yes, it’s a wonderful option for children as well).

Your environment has a tremendous impact on moisture retention in your skin.  During the winter months,  cold weather, dry air and indoor heating systems all contribute to skin that has a tendency to be dehydrated.  In these dry environments, our skin loses more water; in response to this water loss, our skin slows down skin cell turnover.  The decreased rate of skin cell turnover helps build up the stratum corneum of our skin, which is the outer layer of our skin and comprised of dead skin cells  As these dead skin cells accumulate, they create a thicker barrier to prevent water loss.  However, this also results in skin that appears dull and dry, due to this same accumulation of dead skin cells.

We can combat the moisture loss in our skin in a few ways.
Adding a humidifier to your home or work environment can help tremendously.  You want to provide enough moisture to replenish your environment, but not so much as to fog windows or mirrors.   Don’t raise the temperature of your environment too much; try to keep your climate cool, but comfortable.  Adequate water intake is also an important part of the equation…at least 8 8oz glasses every day.

And of course, using a daily moisturizer on your skin is essential to keeping your skin strong and hydrated.  As a dermatologist, I have literally tried hundreds of different body moisturizers, and have made recommendations to tens of thousands of patients over the years.  And I keep coming back to Cerave Moisturizing Cream.  I want to point out there there are different formulations of Cerave products: Cerave SA (this also contains Salicylic Acid), Cerave Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Cerave Eczema Soothing Creamy Oil, etc.  There are also many Cerave Face Creams options as well as products targeted towards specific skin types or part of the body.  These are not the same as the Cerave Moisturizing Cream that I am recommending (although many of their other products are also excellent).

Cerave Moisturizing Cream has several properties that contribute to its effectiveness and I believe set it apart from many other products on the market:

  1. A patented delivery systems that continuously releases essential ceramides (which help restore and strengthen our skin barrier) and hyaluronic acid (which moisturizes and holds water in our skin)
  2. Oil Free
  3. Fragrance Free
  4. Hypoallergenic
  5. Non-irritating and great for sensitive skin

Note that this is my preference for moisturizing from the neck down.  It is not my favorite product for facial moisturization (those recommendations will come up in separate posts).  And having a husband and three daughters who are all prone to dry skin, we go through quite a bit of Cerave Moisturizing Cream in our household.  It remains an absolute favorite!
