Botox and Related Products

What is Botox? Botox is the brand name and most commonly used term to refer to botulinum toxin. This protein is essentially a neurotoxin that has been used effectively for decades to reverse the signs of aging a restore a more youthful appearance to the skin and underlying structures of the head and neck.

Botulinum toxin is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and works at the intersection of where our nerves meet our muscles. When injected, the protein prevents the communication between the nerve and the muscle, essentially relaxing the muscle so that it is unable to contract as strongly. When the muscle cannot contract, we cannot make the strong expressions that are associated with the facial lines/expression lines that become permanently etched into our skin over time.

Did you know that botulinum toxin is available in the US as a few different brands (all of which have been FDA-approved): Botox cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA), and Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA). All of these products work in a similar manner but have slightly different characteristics in terms of time of onset (days to weeks) and duration of action (2-4 months).

Why has this treatment quickly skyrocketed to the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the United States? Quite simply, it is safe, effective, affordable, and produces significant clinical results with minimal to no downtime. In a culture where we value youth and vitality, this treatment is one way that we can slow down the aging process in a way that is natural and non-invasive. Essentially, this treatment allows many individuals to manifest on the outside the way that they feel on the inside: young, healthy, energetic, and full of life!

Are you projecting the way that you feel? I see many patients who come in because a friend or family member told them they looked “angry” or “stressed.” Many of us furrow our brows when we are concentrating or deep in thought without even realizing it. This can cause us to look drawn, upset, and tired. Botox injections can help relax or soften those facial movements so that we don’t create such harsh expressions.

Resting bitch face? Botox can fix that. Deep forehead lines? They can be mitigated with Botox. 11’s between your brows? Botox will erase those. It can even be used to help lift and tighten the neck.

Botox is also very effectively used to treat excessive sweating and the protein also blocks the communication between nerves and sweat glands and helps halt the sweating process.

Selecting the right provider is key in achieving success with Botox. When injected properly, Botox will appear very natural. You should be able to maintain expression and movement without appearing too “frozen” or “overdone.”

I give Botox significant credit for helping me maintain a complexion that is fairly wrinkle-free. And the biggest compliment is that others are often shocked when I reveal this anti-aging secret that I have used for over a decade because the results are so natural!
